A state between the real and man-made, civilization and nature, physical and spiritual realms.
Haegue Yang
South Korean artist Haegue Yang now lives and works in Berlin and Seoul. Her works are inspired by daily routines of immigration and emigration issues. Yang transformed ordinary life fragments from concept to concrete installations, delicately narrating the coexistence of reality and fiction in an abstract way. "The Intermediation" exhibition evokes a neutral state between the real and man-made, civilization and nature, physical and spiritual realms. The product catalogue of hardware store is the textbook for Yang to learn German during immigration life. These industrial objects guide her to connect with unfamiliar environment, which also transform to the medium to describe her non-verbal communication and language barriers.
The series of Yang's well-known shutters work "Sol LeWitt Upside Down" acts as an intermediation of communication in the exhibition. Rather than intense declaration, the performance presents a state of coexistence, depicting the emotional power of inorganic substances. To transform the body of three-dimensional artwork to graphic design: point, line and surface are interweaved to simulate the mutual relationship of light and shadow. "The Intermediation" alludes audience to become an indispensable intermediary value, transcend functionality, and create various potential of space.
